approval ratings, taking a major beating in the latest poll released overnight. >> he is hitting new record lows, as frustration mounts over not just the rollout of obama care but the new health care law overall. the abc news/"washington post" poll puts the president obama's overall job approval rating at just 42%. down 15% points this year. 55 disapprove, a new record high for his presidency. and the president's other ratings are tumbling, as well. 46% see him as a strong leader. 47% see him as honest and trustworthy. and 47% say he understands americans' problems. fueling the negativity is the botched rollout of obama care. americans by nearly 2-1, disapprove of his handling of the rollout. and opposition to the affordable care act is at an all-time high, 57%. last week, the president said he didn't know the extent of the problems with the obama care website when it launched. >> i'm accused of a lot of things.

but i don't think i'm stupid enough to go around saying this is going to be like shopping on amazon or travelocity. >> reporter: and this week, more assurances from the white house. >> the goal here is obviously to get people through the system. and by the system, we don't mean the website. but through the system, and therefore allow them to enroll in a plan. >> reporter: an estimated 7 million americans have already been told they're losing their current health plans. this morning, there are signs of a fix. sources close to the website repair effort say the pace of enrollment on healthcare.gov has nearly doubled since the end of october. software engineers are resolving more than 200 of the 600 defects that have all but derailed that website. now, as of last week, the number of people who successfully enrolled is 50,000. that's nearly twice the number from last month. but only one-tenth of the administration's target. now, to our other major story. the aftermath of the powerful tornadoes in the midwest. take a look at the damage from

just one twister in illinois. so many homes obliterated. another image shows the incredible line between utter destruction and homes completely untouched. the death toll now stands at eight. but officials say it could have been much worse without early warnings and storm sirens. here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: across the midwest, the shock is beginning to set in. residents are picking through debris, finding the remains of their gutted homes. >> i have four church members lose home. >> every minute, i turn around, i'm crying. i don't know. i don't have a house. >> reporter: the ferocious late-season outbreak of tornadoes and rough weather, stretched across 12 states. at least eight people were killed. this is a picture of washington, illinois, before the tornado. and this is what it looks like today. tornadoes in november are rare. the u.s. sees an average of only 50 twisters only in november. the u.s. got that and much more

in about 12 hours. >> this is the deadliest series of tornadoes illinois has ever had in the month of november. >> reporter: in indiana, tornadoes caused injuries and widespread damage through 12 counties. in michigan, one man died when a tree fell on his car. despite all of the devastation, we're learning miraculous stories of survival. accurate weather forecasts. and those timely tornado warnings may have saved lives. in kokomo, indiana, marcy may and 14 others took cover in a bathroom. >> literally shut the bathroom door and the roof peeled away. >> reporter: chris lancaster watched his home torn away, returned to find only rubble. but a miracle. >> daddy's got you, baby. >> reporter: a furry life spared, giving one devastated family hope. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. george zimmerman, spending the night in a florida jail after being arrested again.

this time on assault charges. this is his latest run-in with the law, since being acquitted of shooting trayvon martin. zimmerman's girlfriend call 911, claiming he was threatening her with a shotgun during an argument. >> she was able to work her way to the front door of the residence. and call 911. at that time, he pushed her out of the front of the residence. and then, barricaded the door with some furniture. >> that argument happened inside the home the couple shares. zimmerman faces a judge later today. breaking news overseas right now. two massive explosions rocked beirut, lebanon, a short time ago. the bombs going off in front of the iranian embassy. there could be more than a dozen dead. the blast heavily damaged the embassy and other buildings. no group immediately claimed responsibility. we'll stay on top of this breaking story and bring you the very latest. now, a chilling look this morning at the moment of impact in that deadly plane crash in central russia. airport security video capturing the final seconds of the flight sunday night.

>> thank you, leyla gulen. the bay area is waking up to something it hasn't had in two months. the rain. it will be significant and potentially dangerous. amy hollyfield is in the north bay where it is a wet commute. amy? >> yes, kristen, we are dealing with a heavy drizzle. we drove here from the east bay. it was dry until he bit marin county. then we started noticing the drizzle. it is not a ahead rain but it is wet. the c.h.p. is worried about what this will mean for the roads especially highway 101. there is a lost construction going on in the north bay especially between santa rosa and marin county and they say there is little room for error. >> we will be bringing up a last oil and fluids from the roadway so it will be extra slick. we want give people heads up to give yourself extra time.
